If you are into adventure sports, especially those that are on the water, there are a couple of them that you can do that are very exciting. One of them is called rafting, which you have probably done before, and the other is called kayaking. There is often a lot of confusion when trying to determine which one is which as they are very similar. What Is Rafting?
Rafting is a very fun filled sport, often referred to as white water rafting. It is an extremely fun outdoor activity that occurs on an inflatable raft, designed to handle several people at the same time that are going down a sometimes treacherous river. The type of white water rafting that you do can be divided up into six different classes, with Class 1 being the easiest, and Class 6 being the most difficult. Your goal while you are on the raft is to traverse areas of the water which may include avoiding rocks, experiencing small waves, large waves, and other natural hazards. It is recommended that you go with a guide if you have never done this before, and to always wear the proper safety equipment which will include a wetsuit, helmet, goggles, gloves, and of course a life vest if you are ever tossed out of the raft itself.
What Is Kayaking?
Kayaking is much different than rafting, not because of where this outdoor sport actually occurs, but in the mode of transportation that you are in. A kayak is actually an elongated boat that is very thin, and can accommodate one or more individuals at the same time. Just as rafting requires paddles, so also does kayaking, but they are designed slightly different. They are much smaller, designed to be used on either side of the kayak in a rotating format, allowing you to gain momentum and maintain control in the water. These were actually created thousands of years ago, theoretically by the Eskimos or Inuit. They were once designed as a type of fishing boat that was easy to use to navigate sometimes rough waters, but today they are used almost primarily for recreational purposes.
Which One Should You Try?
For those that are motivated to participate in the water with a group setting, typically at a much slower pace on the water, rafting is the ideal sport because of the slow moving rafts that are much safer to use due to their design, even when going through the rapids. If you are into extreme sports, kayaking is for you. You can actually go at very fast speeds on the rapids, and over waterfalls if you choose to, an extreme sport that caters to adrenaline junkies. It just depends on whether you are in this for fun, or perhaps for competition. Either one of these water sports is fun to participate in, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
